    Administration Rant

There is a woman working in the administration department at NU who I'm convinced has taken it upon herself to throw every obstacle in my way to try and stop me from graduating.

I get emails from this woman at least once a month now. Last year, she sent me an email saying that she has it on record that I am graduating in June of '06. (Incorrect.) I sent her an email saying that I'm not graduating in '06, I'm staying for two years. She responded to say that I needed to fill out an appropriate form for her at least a month ago, and finished her email with the lovely quote, "Did you not realize this?" (Teensy bit bitchy.)

Last month she sent me an email (just me on the list of recipients, mind you, meaning she REALLY took her time to sift through the hundreds of music grad students here) saying she was auditing my degree, and I was all set to graduate, except I needed a violin studio class (which I hadn't heard of at this point) and I needed to be more "well-rounded" in my choices of music electives. By violin studio class, she apparently meant "lessons", and seeing as how I came to Northwestern to study with Ribeiro, I don't know why I would just STOP signing up for lessons with him. And by well-rounded, I'm guessing she meant some sort of theory or history class which Ribeiro specifically advises us NOT to take because it cuts into our practice time. And I agree with him. I'm here to get better at my damn instrument. Plus, I actually have all my electives covered and don't need any to graduate... for her to tell me to take something else is pretty futile.

My latest adventure comes with an email that was sent to about 20 people in the music department, saying that if we were receiving this email, it meant that NU had yet to get our final transcript from our undergrad institution, and if we couldn't prove we got a Bachelors of Music through this, they couldn't give us a Masters. My confusion lies here: how could I have possibly gotten into the Masters program here and STAYED FOR A YEAR AND A HALF if they never got this transcript? Bringing this to my attention about a year ago would have made more sense, and now I have to pay UNC $5 for a document that very likely was gotten lost in the mass disorganization that happens between the two music buildings here.

UNC never gave me this kind of trouble. Whenever there was a problem with my transcript or degree, they would notify Fuchs IMMEDIATELY. And I would get it taken care of. For instance, there was a semester where I signed up for the underclassman credit for lessons when I should have signed up for the upperclassman. Less than a week after registration, Mr. Fuchs asked me in my lesson, "Did you know you signed up for the wrong class?" We got it corrected right away, and everything was hunky dorey. And tuition there was approximately 1/10 of the tuition here.

There are times when I wonder if an administration overhaul isn't necessary. Or maybe this is the status quo at most big universities... and if that's true, UNC's administration should get some sort of freaking prize.

Anyway, I'm off to jump through hoops. Wish me luck with my adversaries!
