Hockey's been a big mystery to me, and again, out of obligation, I've found myself attached to the Blues, because Blues wins make my brother-in-law happy. (I also think there was a season where they were doing really badly and my brother-in-law vowed not to shave until the Blues won a game. Therefore, Blues wins also make my sister happy.) Oh yes, and any team that makes Lisa happy I tend to root for as well - it just ain't kosher to fight with Lisa.
Basketball... I feel as though I should be a Trailblazers fan because I live here.. but it's doubtful I could name any one pro basketball player right now other than Carmello Anthony. (Doubtful that's even spelled right.)
But baseball... oh, baseball is a special sport. In 1993, a 10-year-old Casey attended her first baseball game with her parents at Mile High Stadium (now extinct). The Colorado Rockies... and I think they won. They looked pretty good for their first couple of seasons, even getting the wild card spot in 1995, but that's as far as they got. They quickly fell into one of those teams that no one paid attention to. They eventually took down that sad little lonely banner at Coors Field that said "2005 wild card team" because it looked so pathetic.
I, however, have never stopped loving the Rockies. Rockies games meant time spent with my dad, eating nachos (making sure to sweat from the extra jalepenos) and lemon squishies, announcing our batters in chorus with the Coors Field voice (a growly "Andres Galarraga!" or triumphant "Danteeeeee Bichette!" or a teasing "Larry Walk....ER!") They meant being able to get excited over something that was just mine - a team no one else told me to be a fan of.
They've played incredible, INCREDIBLE baseball this season. Tom and I even got a chance to catch them when they travelled through Chicago, seeing them lose at Wrigley Field.
Well, Cubbies, you ain't in the world series this year, are you?
THE WORLD SERIES!! No longer does Tom wear his baseball cap in shame. Never have I missed Colorado more. I wanted so badly to be there at that game tonight, at a sold-out stadium (something that didn't happen when I went to games unless it was July 4th, and even then...) to witness my guys celebrating their incredible game.
To echo the sentiments of a retro Coors Field:
"GO!"
-long pause-
"ROCKIES!!"
