    Project Casey

My grown up moment of today: I was looking for an etude for my student, McKenzie. Wolfhart, 50 easy etudes, Book 1. First one in the book. As I leafed through, I noticed some old markings in the book that my teacher at the time, Anne, had given me. I flipped through with a sense of gleeful nostalgia, even her handwriting bringing back good memories. (Anne was a great teacher.) The second etude in the book had the date 2-11-95 scrawled in. Awwww, little nearly 12-year-old me, attempting that etude. I, in turn, was a little excited to pass it on to the almost-12-year-old I was going to go see.

I copied the etude for her and showed her Anne's notes. "These were my teacher's notes," I said, watching her eyes widen in wonder. "There's an etude in that book she dated 1995."

    McKenzie's response? "That's a year before I was born!"

It's just not right. I went from feeling wise to just feeling old. It's like when I took stock of my niece's age and realized all the kindergarteners this year were officially born after 2000. Please allow me to insert a Lindsay-esque "WHAT?" right here. I know aging and gradually seeing more of the population around you become younger is just part of life, but sheesh. I worked on this etude before McKenzie even EXISTED.

    In other news:

Project Exercising Casey is going very well - I went for another run today and have my weight schedule all figured out for tomorrow. (It's amazing what the right sports bra will motivate a girl to do.) Project Practicing Casey, however, needs a tuneup.

I know I just have to be patient with myself and insist on the routine. After all, it took me the better part of a year to get used to practicing in Evanston, and I had a special room available and everything. I think I just need to keep setting things up for myself - recitals, auditions, etc. And getting new batteries for both my minidisc microphone and Dr. Beat will be a big plus. (By the way... were you aware that when a Dr. Beat runs ultra low on batteries it becomes DEMONIC and beats randomly really quietly and when you start to push buttons, it will spring to life for a few seconds and make your eardrums explode? That'll teach me to test my Dr. Beat batteries.)

Project Socializing Casey is making some progress... I actually am starting to have some friends in the Portland, OR network on facebook! I'm feeling less lonely, though things do always get better when my honey's around - fortunately, that'll happen the day after tomorrow, so that will get a big push as well.

Guess the only factor left is Project... Casey. Deep, huh?
